Real Busy Lately!
I can't believe that I haven't posted anything since the middle of the summer! That's what having children will do to you. Thomas and Patrick were born on August 17 at 1 PM, so things have been a little crazy over the last month or so. I will try to stay on top this blog as best I can.
Summer 2007
Working the day to day operations of the GoG this year has been interesting to say the least. Very repetitive. Very repetitive. Very repetitive...Sorry, got stuck there. I met a ton of nice folks from all over the world. Meeting people from everywhere is one of the nicer benefits of working in a tourist town. I love finding out what brings people to visit Gettysburg. The history, the scenery of the area and the battlefield, and ghost tours of course! All biggies. But I met a guy last night who was from San Diego and always loved history and this was his first visit to Gettysburg. He was amazed at the size of the battle and how large the battlefield here. He just wanted to know more and I told him that his questions will be endless, for even those of us that think we know a thing or two about the battle, the more you look into it, the less you know. But driving home last night I realized something.
Their basic curiosity about Gettysburg gets them here, the magnitude of it brings them back.
I guess that's how I got here too. I never really thought about it like that until last night. Oh and about last night.
September 17, 2007 Baltimore St
It was a really nice night for a walk. Almost no humidity, no breeze, and about 55 degrees at 8PM. 16 people came along for the downtown walk. This was a interesting group as they were from San Diego, Chicago, Iowa, Ohio, NJ, and Connecticut. Town was quiet and nothing overly exciting happened on the tour. We all had some fun and then I did it again.
At 9:45 the folks from Wyndham Worldwide came for a tour. I have forgotten how tough it is to do two of the same tour back to back. These people were from all over the world as one man was from Australia and another from Holland. These people were managers of big hotels and I could tell that they were some pretty important people within their own circles, but they were networking and talking shop in between stories. They didn't interrupt me at all, but walking between stops they were all business. That's some hardcore time management and efficiency skills.
Storyteller's Rant: I am almost at the point where I am going to throw somebody out of the office soon. I can not understand how people can not make up their minds about what tour to go on. If given a choice, most people hem and haw over which tour is the best? What tour has the most activity? Which tour has more ghosts? All dumb questions. I have to be honest about this people, when you ask me one of those questions my blood pressure goes up. All the tours have ghosts, if they didn't we wouldn't do the tour. Which tour is the scariest? That is subjective, it depends on who you ask. Just pick one and let your imagination do the rest. Am I guaranteed to see a ghost? I f I could guarantee that we would charge a lot more for tickets. Just pick a tour!
Seriously, pick a tour based on the time it begins. Other than that just relax and have fun. I have seen people leave the office, get into fights with each other and me, and not wind up going on a tour because they couldn't pick one. You are not buying a house, it is not a life or death situation, just pick one! Please for my sanity!
Haunt you later...

Sorry for the Delay!
July 5, 2007
I have been slacking this year! There is never enough time I guess. My wife is having twins in less that 8 weeks so things have been a little hectic over the last few months, needless to say!
I have given tons of tours since I last wrote. The Ghost Train rides have been a lot of fun this season. The Train departs every Friday night at 7:00 and I'll be on there again on July 20th.
I have been on all sorts of walking tours over the last few months. We survived group season, where even the notorious E.T. Richardson from Springfield PA, which most of us were not looking forward to, came along and we had a great time. That group was one of the best groups we had all spring. We met groups from all over, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusettes, Ohio, Wisconsin, just to name a few.
I took over managing the tour office this year so I have not been out on a lot of regular tours lately, but every once in a while we get over run and I have to put my uniform on and hit the streets. Last Saturday I had to guide the late Baltimore St tour. That was a nice group of people from Chicago, Michigan, and a family from my neck of the woods in Connecticut The temperature was nice and these people laughed at all of my jokes, all of them. I should have marked that down somewhere. I also gave a Carlisle St tour which heads up to Gettysburg College. I forgot how long of a tour that one is. I got it finished in an hour and 45 and incorporated the Eisenhowers into the tour pretty well. I started by mentioning them going to the Majestic Theater, then Ike's ties to the College and his office, and finally the house that they lived in in 1918. It tied together fairly well.
I will do my best to stay on top of this blog. I would like to thank all of you that read this on occasion and for coming out and seeing us at the Ghosts of Gettysburg!

From Cub Scouts to College Kids
April 28, 2007 Seminary Ridge
7:30 PM
The Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association, of which I am a volunteer, had a group of scouts camping at the Daniel Lady Farm to do some community service and a group of about 50 joined me on the Seminary. I thought I was going to be dealing with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, but when the group showed up these kids were Cub Scouts and Jr. Girl Scouts! Big difference! I eventually wrangled control of these kids and freaked them out a little. I think they learned a little something from my interpretive rants and we finished up and I prepared for the next group.
9:45
A group of college kids from Manchester came down and met me on the Seminary. It got started a little late but we had a good time. Summer is coming!

April Entries All Thrown Together!
I gave a ton of tours over the last few weeks and can not keep track of them all. The first couple of weeks of April were "Spring Break" and families were coming to Gettysburg. It was a wierd batch of weather that the area got so our busier nights were actually Mondays and Tuesdays when the temperatures hit highs in the 80's! Then the cold would come and settle in and we led some walks against the stiff breeze.
The school groups braved the weather and I actually had a group from New Hampshire that was worried that it was going to be two cold to go on tour! They left the Granite State in a snow storm and sub-freezing weather and were concerned that 40 degrees was going to be too cold! I had to stroke their New England egos a little and told them that they were hurting my New England pride! Starting temperature for the walk was around 45 degrees and we had a good time.
Is it June yet?

Fun Group on Baltimore St
Baltimore St. Tuesday April 3
Again we had ideal weather for a walk. There were tons of people out and about, and many came along on the tour. A family of four from Washington State, and some nice folks from New York, North Carolina, Massachusetts. There was also a family from New Jersey with two little girls that I know had a lot of fun. I hope the picture that Mom took of me and the children came out. This was one of those nights where my storytelling was on. I heard comments after the tour like "That was awesome!" That is more rewarding than anything.

Watch Where you Stand!
Baltimore St Saturday March 31, 2007
We had some fairly nice weather Saturday night. Well over 100 people went out and after splitting the group up a few ways we went off into the comfortable March evening. Some folks from Canada came all the way down to Gettysburg to take the tour. I usually mention how I like to meet people from all across the country, this night I had to say the continent!
One of the more memorable parts of the tour was up on High St. I stopped in front of the old German Reformed Church and told the story about the phantom in the black suit that is seen walking across High Street and disappearing in the borough building parking lot. I mention in the story that the ghost walks right out of the wall of the church. Well there was this kid about 9 years old that was leaning up against the wall. When I mentioned the ghost coming out of that wall, this kid made it to the other side of the sidewalk in record time! The whole group got a laugh and I told this kid "Bet you're glad I gave you that lollipop now, aren't ya'?" He then took the pop out of his pocket and unwrapped it and began to savor the comfort that comes from candy. Great time!

A Day Early and a Guide Short
Monday March 26, 2007 Baltimore St
You couldn't ask for better weather on Monday night. But it was very hectic as a group of 50 students showed up a day early! A mix up in the paperwork had this group showing up before a much larger group was coming to town. We called in another guide and made due. The guides that took the first group said that those kids were fantastic.
The other three of us took the 8th graders from Pocatello Idaho through the streets this night. This was a pretty good group of kids but Civil War trivia was not their strong suit. They didn't know who Jefferson Davis was. I understand that a lot of people don't know who the President of the Confederacy was, but I would hope an 8th grade class visiting Gettysburg would. Why would a group spend all of that money and time and not talk about the places they were going to on a week long field trip. They spent no time studying the battle or the Civil War whatsoever before coming to town. How effective can their visit really be. "We saw a bunch of monuments in Gettysburg Mom and Dad." That is about all this group is going to take away from their visit. This is my biggest pet pieve when it comes to school groups!
Please remember to phrase your answer in the form of a question.
Sorry Alex!

Foggy Downtown Saturday Night!
Saturday March 24, 2007 Baltimore St
There was a very light rain with a fairly thick fog that settled in over the Gettysburg Borough right around tour time on Saturday. We sold too many tickets, so I got out my new hat and went walking. The atmosphere was great. Most of the folks were from Pennsylvania, but there was a couple of gals from St Louis that won the lollipop prize. This was a great group. It started to really rain right at the end of the tour, but thankfully there was enough room under the overhang at the old German Reformed Church and we finished up without getting drenched!
There are six new guides joining the guide force at Ghosts of Gettysburg this year and one of them came along for a training tour this night. This guy is going to be a great addition to our team, he has a lot of experience and enthusiasm. But the reason that I bring this up is that he brought two friends along on the tour. As we were talking after the walk was over, this couple asked if we used to do a long and a short tour in the same night. Back in 1998, we did. The guides would give a Baltimore and a Carlisle St tour, those were long evenings. Woah! Anyways, this couple said that they were on my tour 9 years ago and they thought I looked familiar. Crazy! A few weeks before these people remembered my name from 4 years ago and then this couple recalls being on my tours 9 years ago. Small world!
We are open seven days a week starting March 30th!

California Kids in the Pennsylvania Snow
Monday March 19, 2007 Baltimore St
There was still snow on the ground for a walk with 8th Graders from the Sacramento California area. They kept taking pictures of the snow piles, telling me that they don't see that very much back home. I should have mentioned that the lightning bugs come out in a few months, but you can't have it both ways I guess.
When we made it to High St this one girl asked why they put the jail across the street from the public school. That is a great question. I really don't know. But I am sure that I will mention it on every tour from now on! You never stop learning and improving on your storytelling and guiding and help comes from all sorts of people and places!
Is it April yet?

Rainy Saturday on Baltimore St.
Baltimore St. March 10, 2007
The new season at Ghosts of Gettysburg is starting off strong, on Saturdays at least. On Friday night only a handful of people joined the 8:oo tour, which I was not guiding. But a few of these people were on one of my Seminary Ridge tours about 4 years ago and they remembered my name! I guess I made a lasting impression. It just threw me off a little when these people started calling me by my first name and I had no idea who they were!
The rain was on and off Saturday night but never really came down all that hard. I ended up guiding two walks mainly due to my lack ability to tell time. Boy Scout Troop 250, from Lakewood, NJ, showed up at 6:30 when they were originally supposed to post at 8:00. They came early because I mistakingly told them show up at 6:30 when I meant 7:30. Of course the guide that I called in to handle this group wasn't coming to the office until 7:30, so I threw on my outfit and away we went. Boy Scouts are always a fun group, most if not all of them are interested in what's going on, and these kids fit the bill. We went the Middle Street route where it was dark and quiet and we had some fun.
After I bid farewell to the scouts it was time to handle the regular 8:00. Over 70 people signed up so three of us went off in a light drizzle that picked up towards the end of the walk. These folks were from New Jersey, North Carolina, and Colorado as well as a few other places. They laughed at most of my jokes and since no one picked up a snowball and fired it at me I guess they weren't all that bad! We had some fun, they only thing that could have made it better is if the rain didn't pick up at the last stop. These people looked cold and wet. Rain can add some pretty cool atmosphere, but at this time of year it can drain the energy right out of a group.
It's almost bus group season!

Walter Reed M.S. on Baltimore St
Monday February 26, 2007 Baltimore St
Around 50 students and chaperones from the Walter Reed M.S. in California joined us on Baltimore St Monday night. The weather was around 35 degrees and was much more tolerable than our last tour! Brrrr! This was a good group of kids and it seemed they enjoyed it.
Groups from California are always interesting. They are much different from those on the East Coast most of the time. They are normally more laid back, even the kids who are not interested in the tour will not give the guide any grief. They usually just hang out in the back and keep fairly quiet. Thankfully this was one of those groups!
The season is starting this Friday night. Check out the new Ghosts of Gettysburg MySpace page at www.myspace.com/ghostsofgettysburg

Frozen First Tour of the Year
Sunday Feb. 18, 2007 Baltimore St
The Gettysburg area was buried under snow and ice after the first real winter storm hit last week. But that did not stop about 66 diehards from braving the cold weather and taking our Baltimore St. tour. Bill and I bundled up, met this group from southern Georgia and hit the icy streets.
The group was not used to this type of weather but toughed it out anyways. A few of them asked me what the temperature was and I said it was around 20 degrees and with the wind chill it was below 10. The tour only lasted for about 45 minutes as I mercifully ended the walk to cheers voiced through chattering teeth. This probably was not the highlight of their trip, but it is something they are going to tell everyone about. "You won't believe it, we went on a Ghost tour in 20 degree weather and a foot of snow...."
Looking forward to warmer nights....

New Season Coming Up
After taking the winter off, the Ghosts of Gettysburg is gearing up for the 2007 season. I will be in the office full time this year so stop in and say hello. We are looking for new guides, so any storytellers out there, we're interviewing.
I am thinking about changing the name of the blog to a more user friendly name. The name change should take place in early March. I've also invited some of our other guides to contribute this year, so check back and see what some of the other Ghosts of Gettysburg guides are up to.
Looking forward to great season!

The last Ghost Train departed this past Saturday with much improved weather and my storytelling was the most polished it had ever been on the train. I really enjoy walking through the cars before the train departs handing out candy and meeting all sorts of people. Thanks to all for coming along.
Andy and Tonya from Exspiro Productions came along to shoot a promotional video for the Ghost Train. Again I'm chipping away at my 15 minutes with through the Ghosts of Gettysburg! Look for us in Exspiro's "The Other Side" documentary coming out in March of 2007!

Crazy Weather on Halloween Weekend!
Saturday October 28, 2006
The weather could not have been any worse for the weekend of the 28th. It rained and we had very high winds. But the crowds still came out and I had double train duty on Saturday night!

Conductor Bob and I on the Ghost Train!
The wind blew trees over the tracks and we never made it to Biglerville. I kept telling stories as we sat still, but at least I wasn't out in the wind. It was definately an interesting evening.
I was also out on the Seminary with a very nice group of people from Pennsylvania around 2 PM that afternoon. The campus was wet and I was surprised we didn't get blown off of the ridge!
